The San Clemente Island Goat is a critically endangered breed. These goats are small and deer-like, and are genetically quite different from all other goat breeds alive today. Their exact origins are unknown, but their ancestors were probably left on San Clemente Island by explorers in the early history of the Americas. These goats are generally shy and gentle. They can be used for milking small quantities or rich milk, or for meat, brush clearing, or pulling carts. Their meat is mild. They are very hardy and can impart hybrid vigor when crossed with other breeds.
