It has been a while since I’ve given an update on how Cascadia Heritage Farm is trying to make Malay chickens, more vigorous. Viggo and I have been working on our Malay chicken project for the past few years, and I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to do this work together. Our focus has been on strengthening one of the oldest chicken breeds through thoughtful long term breeding. Despite some life changes, we’re thankful to continue projects like M.I.G.H.T. (Malay Invigoration Gene Hybridization Team). Right now, the team consists of Viggo and me, and we’re open to welcoming additional participants. I’ll be sharing more photos and updates as we head into the new year.
Over the last few years we’ve bred Giant Indo to enhance size and color, while also allowing our Asil population to breed independently. Based on those results, we’re excited to begin breeding more Asil back into our Malay lines in the coming season to make our Mighty Malays more vigorous.
There’s something compelling about birds that can forage for themselves and even roam our street to the chagrin or delight of our neighbors, something both Viggo and I find genuinely entertaining.
One of the photos is Viggo wearing my grandmother’s hat with two feathers from one of our turkeys that he caught and plucked himself. We were aiming for a Pilgrim look, but with the feathers it may have turned into Mercury instead. Our Giant Indo Malay crosses have made a cameo.
I’m especially grateful for the chance to do this work together as a father and son. Thank you to everyone who has supported us along the way. I’m truly grateful ❤️
