We had three Malay chicks hatch recently.
The video shows my son, Viggo, holding one on his 6th birthday.
We had incubated 16 eggs from the breeding pair we received from George Clark of Arizona.
We at Cascadia Heritage Farm believe George Clark is doing one of the best jobs in USA for preservation of rare bloodlines for Malay chickens.
The hen is from a Pyle rooster from Dennis Campbell of Tennessee. According to George, Dennis only bred Malay Chickens for a few years. The hen is just under two years old.
The young rooster is a grandson from the Billy Sumner bloodline from North Carolina. The rooster is only 8 months old.
Even though only 3 hatched out of 16 eggs, we feel very lucky. It takes up to two years for Malay Chickens to fully mature. We were not sure if the rooster would be able to mate successfully. He was and we are thrilled.
Shuna, my wife and partner at Cascadia Heritage Farm, was in charge of the incubating eggs and does a great job!. She made sure the incubators had enough water in them and set the temperature to 101 – 102F. These temperatures support straight toes on our chicks and avoid the issues related to lower temperatures and crooked toes.
These three chicks are very lively buggers!
With the birth of these chicks, we are excited, but are also reminded we need to build a facility to accommodate and showcase this growing population of rare and extraordinary birds.
Life seems to us here at Cascadia Heritage Farm to be a very strange place.
Suffering can be overwhelming and desperation pressing in. We want to acknowledge this but also want to celebrate the breathtaking sublime beauty of it all.
We are excited to believe that we are making a difference and believe you can too.
We are thankful for this opportunity.
