The Sultan Chicken is critically endangered. This breed is of Turkish origin, and has several unique physical characteristics that distinguish it from other breeds. It is an ornamental, show and pet breed of chicken, not being a prolific egg layer or meat producer. These chickens are very docile, and they’re our son’s favorites for carrying around under his arm or taking for a ride on his bike. They are gentle and are not hard on the earth, doing very little damage to gardens if they’re allowed access. Unfortunately because of their head feathers they usually don’t see aerial predators coming, and are very vulnerable to the Bald Eagles and various owls we have around here.
